How to Minimize a New Furniture Scent

Have you ever noticed the distinct smell of a new car? In time that odor dissipates - much the same way with furniture and area rugs. Due to the way that home furnishings are made, shipped or stored, there may be a scent that lingers for a few days. There's usually nothing wrong with an item that has an odor. Here are some simple remedies to safely clear away that new furniture or rug scent.

Furniture

1. Let the item air out in a garage or basement for a few days. Do not temporarily store an item in an area that is high in humidity or moisture.
2. Place an open box of baking soda in a drawer or inside a cabinet. Dyer sheets also can help.
3. Clean the item with furniture polish or another safe furniture cleaner.

Area Rugs

1. Let the rug air outside, if possible, or in a large, well-ventilated room. Do not place the rug in a garage or basement where moisture or humidity may be absorbed into the rug.
2. Spray the rug with a fabric freshener.
3. Vacuum both the front and the back of the rug a few times.
