How to Minimize a New Furniture Scent
Have you ever noticed the distinct smell of a new car? In time that odor dissipates - much the same way with furniture and area rugs. Due to the way that home furnishings are made, shipped or stored, there may be a scent that lingers for a few days. There's usually nothing wrong with an item that has an odor. Here are some simple remedies to safely clear away that new furniture or rug scent.
Furniture
- Let the item air out in a garage or basement for a few days. Do not temporarily store an item in an area that is high in humidity or moisture.
- Place an open box of baking soda in a drawer or inside a cabinet. Dyer sheets also can help.
- Clean the item with furniture polish or another safe furniture cleaner.
Area Rugs
- Let the rug air outside, if possible, or in a large, well-ventilated room. Do not place the rug in a garage or basement where moisture or humidity may be absorbed into the rug.
- Spray the rug with a fabric freshener.
- Vacuum both the front and the back of the rug a few times.
