Farmhouse Style

Embrace authenticity with farmhouse furniture and decor

Home Decorators Collection

Farmhouse style has a repurposed, nostalgic look that calls to mind a simpler time. While a farmhouse concept may not be part of an actual farmhouse or even look exactly like one, it evokes the same feel.

In some ways, Farmhouse style can be described as a combination of Cottage and Industrial. You'll find some similar finishes, especially worn, natural wood and matte colors. You'll also see metal structures and accents with mechanical appeal. But where Cottage is softer, with pale hues and a focus on florals, Farmhouse is more rugged. And where Industrial is factory-inspired, Farmhouse looks have a rustic, even pastoral aesthetic.

A farmhouse-style kitchen might have hardwood floors, an apron-front sink and an old-style stove. Augment it with farmhouse decor like simple pendant lighting, an antique-look clock, reclaimed wood cutting boards and ceramic dry goods canisters.

Capture the look in your living room with comfortable upholstered seating and cabinets in natural wood finishes. Bolster this farmhouse furniture with accent tables with open lines, traditional lamps with burlap shades, rustic mirrors and landscape wall art.

A stripped-down candelabra-style chandelier adds farmhouse style to your dining room. Surround a solid wood or plank table with spindle chairs or rail-back chairs, then soften the look with cushions or slipcovers. Add texture to your table with a linen runner, and select simple dishes and glassware.

For a farmhouse concept in the bedroom, try mixing and matching antique-look wood furniture. Choose bed linens and curtain panels with muted colors and patterns that recall the gingham dresses of the 19th century. Finally, add clear or colored glass vases and a cluster of botanical prints.
